Past Tense Of Shot

This may seem like an odd topic, but I actually received this question regarding the past tense of the word “shot”. Well, I figured that since this whole blog is dedicated to basketball, why not go out there and explain what the past tense is of the word “shot”?

Now before I go out and say what the past tense of the word “shot” really is, I just want to talk about how this question is actually more complicated than it seems.

Well to start it off, the base of this specific word comes from the word “shoot”. “To shoot” is an irregular verb and that is why the past tense for the word “shoot” is “shot. The past tense of verb “shoot” is “shot”. “Shot” is actually considered to be both the past participle and past tense of the word “shoot”. So the word “shot” is already a past tense of the base word “shoot”.

After doing some research, I actually found that the past tense of the word “shot” is “shotted”. This is definitely an odd word, and you will never hear anyone say this word, especially in the game of basketball. Normally in basketball-speaking terms, people always say “he shot the ball”, or “he is shooting the ball”.

So although “shotted” is considered to be the past tense of the word “shot”, I would never go out there and say “shotted” in any sort of conversation or in any writing for a class for example.

In basic terms, you should always be looking at these specific words/phrases when it comes down to the topic of the word “shot”, especially in the game of basketball.

Present Tense: Shoot [BASE WORD]

Present Participle: Shooting

Past Tense: Shot

Past Participle: Shot

Phrase: “To Shoot”

The past participle of the base word must come from an auxiliary verb, such as “have shot”.

When it all comes down to the word “shot”, you should consider this word to be in the past tense, rather than using an odd word like “shotted”. The word “shot” is considered to be the past tense to the correct base word “shoot”.

For example, if you want to write the phrase “Kobe Bryant is shooting the basketball away from the defender” in the past tense, you can write it in some way such as this:

“Kobe Bryant shot the basketball away from the defender and the shot went in”.

I personally felt like this was an odd question, but this is why I am here. I want to make sure that if you have any questions or concerns with anything regarding basketball, I am here to answer your questions always. Again, although the answer to this question is arguably “shotted”, I want to say that you should not use this word, but rather stick to words like “shoot”, “shot”, “shooting”, and “to shoot”.

You don’t have to follow me or believe me. If you want some expert advice, make sure to go out and search it up on the web, because these are my own personal opinions based on what I already know, and some research that I did.
